Covenant Partnership (Membership)

To be a member of a church is to make a public promise to live according to the Word of God and to support the work of a local congregation. We call this promise a covenant. Every Christian is part of the universal Body of Christ in the world (organism). But, only by making this public promise of "covenant partnership" does a person become part of a local church as organization. A covenant is the foundation for a healthy accountable relationship in marriage, society, church membership, and with God.

Membership in a church is not like membership in a club, store, or an organization. Most members of an organization are seen as consumers and the organization exists to serve them. The church of Jesus Christ is a counter cultural community where membership equates to ministry, service, love, accountability, and moving from a consumer to a servant providing care and God's love toward others. At New City Church, we take seriously we are a church "for the city", and not ourselves. Membership (Covenant Partnership) helps us live this out together in Kansas City.

Baptism

Adult Baptism

If you have never been baptized before and would like to be, you will need to complete the church membership process at New City Church first. Be sure to discuss your desire with an elder/pastor at your membership interview. This will allow you to be scheduled for baptism on the day you take your membership vows in front of the congregation at a Sunday worship service.

Infant and Child Baptism

1. Please read our overview of New City's position on infant baptism. New City will baptize infants of church members.

2. If you are already a member, you can register your child for baptism at any of our baptism services.

3. If you are a new member parent and have not taken your membership vows yet, please contact ryan@newcitychurchkc.org for help in scheduling your vows (and baptism if applicable) and your infant’s baptism.

Older Children

New City will baptize your older child after he or she has made a made a profession of faith. An elder/pastor will meet with your child for a baptism class before they are baptized on a Sunday. Contact Pastor Ryan ryanjpelton@gmail.com for more information.

Covenant Partnership (Membership) Process

There are four steps for becoming a Covenant Partner (member) at New City Church.

STEP 1: INTRO TO NEW CITY

This is where you will learn about the history, mission, and vision of New City, acquaint yourself with its ministries and opportunities, and dialogue with elders and other congregants on questions you may have about the church or Christian community. In this class, you will also learn of ways we are serving our community and how you can get involved in the life of the church.

Sign up on THE CITY to be updated on the next Intro to New City class.

STEP 2: THE GOSPEL CLASS (LIVE)

Attend The Gospel Class led by Pastor Ryan, or other pastor/elder. This class will be 90 minutes of teaching and 30 minutes of Question and Answer. There will be a resource guide "Vision Booklet" explaining our beliefs, convictions, affiliations, philosophy of ministry, and how to get involved with the church family. We will send a digital copy for you to peruse before the class.

STEP 3: COVENANT PARTNERSHIP (Membership) INTERVIEW

After completing The Gospel Class you will make an appointment to meet with a pastor/elder for a 45-60 minute interview. The interview will focus on sharing your testimony, explaining the gospel in your own words, and an opportunity to ask any questions of the pastors/elders.

STEP 4: PUBLIC MEMBERSHIP VOWS AND BAPTISM

After approval by the elders/pastors, on an assigned Sunday worship service, you will publicly say your membership vows before the congregation. You will also be baptized if necessary.

Please contact Pastor Ryan ryanjpelton@gmail.com with any questions or to schedule membership interview/baptism.
